Is Adoption Right For Me?

Why should I have a companion animal?

Well, if you aren't swayed by the unconditional love your companion animal will give you for the price of food, a bowl of water, and a warm place to sleep try some science.

Companion animals are scientifically proven to:

  • Decrease blood pressure
  • Decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Increase opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities

Not to mention being utterly content curled up in your lap or just laying on the floor at your feet.

Why should I adopt a companion animal?

Most local animal shelters care for wonderful animals looking for a home. These animals are not always "difficult to care for or train". Many have just been neglected and assimilate into a warm and caring home.

The staff at these shelters know the animals in their care and can assist you in finding the right match for your personality and lifestyle. Helping you find a match that will last.

There is also a financial benefit to taking in a sheltered companion. Adopting an animal is less expensive than buying one from a pet store or a breeder.

How do I choose the right animal for me?

If you are thinking about adopting a companion animal, Safe Haven for Animals suggests learning their general needs in order to find the animal that best suits your lifestyle. If you understand what you are getting into with your new family member you are more likely to have a fulfilling relationship.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Can you live with pet hair and the occasional wear and tear caused by your companion animal?
  • Will everyone in your home welcome your adoption?
  • How much space do you have inside and outside your home? Is it enough?
  • Do you rent? If so, do you have permission to own a pet?
  • How much time do you have to spend with your new companion? Is it enough?
  • Do you have the financial resources to take care of your animal?
  • How will you take care of your animal companion when you travel?
